H.P. Patent Information Centre was established by Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Department of Science & Technology Govt. of India, in the year 1998 and it started functioning in 1999. Since then the Centre has performed commendable work in the field of IP awareness. Since its inception in 1998 the Centre has organised 15 awareness workshops, due to the awareness created by these workshops the patent filing in the State has increased considerably.

On the initiative of HPPIC, Kullu Shawl and Kangra Tea have been registered under Geographical Indications Act 1999. HPPIC collected relevant data from stakeholders and scientific institutions, and prepared the case of these GIs for registration under GI Act 1999.
